Os estudos académicos sobre os resultados de aplicações de técnicas e métodos de controlo e gestão da qualidade tendem a concentrar-se mais nos benefícios e menos nas limitações e com alguma dificuldade nas deficiências e falhas. Neste capítulo, revisitamos estudos históricos e outros mais recentes no sentido de identificar tendências persistentes e novas tendências. A perspetiva histórica pode enriquecer as análises atuais. De início revistamos as críticas, os sucessos e insucessos identificados no passado, bem com as respostas às críticas. De seguida caracterizamos a investigação (passado e presente), através de análise crítica às revisões da literatura, peça necessária em grande parte dos projetos, identificando dificuldades, obstáculos e deficiências.
Por último, sublinhamos algumas tendências de investigação e sua importância para o movimento da qualidade.
António Ramos Pires has received a PhD from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology – New University of Lisbon – Portugal). He was President of the Portuguese Quality Institute (IPQ), President of the Board of the Portuguese Association for Quality (APQ). He is President of the Board of theQuality Research Network (RIQUA). His research interests are in the areas of process management,design and development.
