Increasing life expectancy and decreasing birth rates are key factors for an aging population. As the number of young and healthy blood donors tends to decline, blood centers will face a lack of blood components in the future. The authors of this study assume that nurse communication during blood donation can be one of the factors contributing to the quality of this healthcare process and blood donors’ satisfaction. In order to analyze the opinion of blood donors on nurses’ communication skills, a quantitative study was carried out in 2018. 156 non-remmunerated blood donors answered questions about their expectations for nurses’ communication skills before the blood donation and evaluated the experience answering the questions after the donation. The main expectations of blood donors for communication skills of nurses were telling the truth, the nurse’s openness, and sincerity. Donors also expected that they would be warmly welcomed, and the nurse would be friendly, non-irritable or rude. No significant differences were found according the sociodemographic data of the respondents. After analyzing the opinion of blood donors about the communication skills of nurses, the results of the research showed that respondents evaluated the communication skills of nurses high enough – the mean of all statements of the statements ranged from 4.17 to 4.58. Respondents appreciated that they were warmly welcomed and the nurse was friendly. Taking into the account high expectations for nurse communication we could summarize the study and state that nurse communication during blood donation is one of the factors contributing to the quality of this healthcare process and blood donors’ satisfaction.
