A indústria 4.0 direciona os aspetos da qualidade para um mundo cada vez mais virtual e de grande quantidade de dados. O desafio é descobrir os benefícios que os dados (incluindo o tratamento estatístico) podem trazer ao processo de tomada de decisão. Muitas das abordagens relativas a Indústria 4.0 (I4.0), não conduzidas por iniciativas da qualidade, mas sim pelas áreas das tecnologias de informação, engenharia, compras e marketing. A Qualidade 4.0 (Q4.0) pode definir-se como a transformação digital da gestão da qualidade, e suas implicações nas pessoas, processos e tecnologia. A Q4.0 foca-se no uso das tecnologias da I4.0, tais como Inteligência artificial (IA) e digitalização, e ajuda a melhorar o desempenho, a tomar decisões atempadamente e a proporcionar transparência e visibilidade. Neste capítulo abordam-se 7 ferramentas e tecnologias e 10 fatores que contribuem para a implementação da Q4.0, bem como as 5 categorias de dados. A transição para a era digital necessita de formação e novas competências. As oportunidades para a gestão da qualidade são identificadas e a investigação futura é perspetivada. O design de produtos e serviços na era digital é introduzida (será desenvolvida em capítulo dedicado).
Os “modelos”/frameworks como o EFQM necessitam de ser revistos para integrarem a transição digital.

He was President of the Portuguese Quality Institute (IPQ), President of the Board of the Portuguese Association for Quality (APQ). He is President of the Board of the Quality Research Network (RIQUA). His research interests are in the areas of process management, design and development.
