Neste capítulo salientam-se algumas das áreas de desenvolvimento teórico da gestão da qualidade. Alguns pontos de consenso e desacordo são identificados para contextualizar a construção de patamares teóricos mais elevados. Embora não exista um conjunto de conhecimentos coerente e estruturado, este pode ser construído a partir dos contributos de outras áreas científicas, fazendo sentido desenvolver o campo teórico, a partir das teorias das organizações, das teorias da gestão e da psicossociologia em geral, das metodologias desenvolvidas pelos “qualidistas” e por consultores de gestão. A construção de uma teoria passará, nomeadamente pela generalização das constatações efetuadas em investigações baseadas em estudos de casos, pela construção de modelos e metodologias e pela exploração da universalidade. Pretende-se averiguar a necessidade de teorias específicas, trazendo à discussão algumas preocupações e desafios, com recurso a meta- análises e outros estudos de síntese, tendo por base a experiência do autor, enquanto editor da Revista TMQ – Techniques, Methodologies and Quality. A análise crítica da I&D passada e atual revela resultados contraditórios, controversos ou mesmo conflituosos, tendo sido identificadas deficiências metodológicas e dimensões mais explicativas, para além de recomendações para o design dos projetos de investigação.
António Ramos Pires has received a PhD from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology – New University of Lisbon – Portugal). He was President of the Portuguese Quality Institute (IPQ), President of the Board of the Portuguese Association for Quality (APQ). He is President of the Board of the Quality Research Network (RIQUA). His research interests are in the areas of process management, design and development.
